“He’s Eager To Continue On At This Stage”- Andrew McDonald On David Warner Test Retirement

Head coach Andrew McDonald said that struggling opener David Warner has “not indicated” that he will soon stop playing in Test matches.

The longest format would not be played by Warner for another 12 months, he had previously stated. But his knowledge is essential for Australia’s visit to India early the following year.

Before that, he is scheduled to play his 100th Test against South Africa on Boxing Day, with the series concluding at his home ground, the SCG, the following day. It could be a fitting send-off, but McDonald is certain Warner will play Test cricket beyond the home summer.

“He’s eager to keep going at this point. He hasn’t even hinted at anything else “McDonald explained. His hunger for labor – in and around training – remains. He’s working hard at the crease, and you’ve noticed that he’s doing well. He’s just discovered other ways to get out, which can happen from time to time” Andrew McDonald said.

“We’re working towards a World Test Championship [final], and he’d like to be a part of it. So that’s a clear priority for us, and South Africa is a part of it. Then it’s on to India” Andrew McDonald Added.

“We’re moving forward as a team”: Andrew McDonald

Warner has been backed to ignore any distraction from the ongoing off-field turmoil before the first Test at the Gabba starts on December 17 ahead of what could be a difficult three-match series against South Africa, who feature a star-studded pace attack.

“He’s great at compartmentalizing and separating the off-field from the on-field. And I think most of the great champions do that very well, I sense this situation is no different. We respect and understand David’s decision to withdraw from that appeals process” McDonald said.

“He’s moved forward, we’re moving forward as a team, and we’ve got a seriously good opponent confronting us at the Gabba. So our focus is firmly on that… and so is David’s” Andrew McDonald Added.

Warner has now made 675 runs at 28.12 in 25 Test innings since his previous century in January 2020.
