South Africa Penalised For Maintaining Slow Over-rate In 3rd ODI vs England

South Africa National Cricket Team have been penalised for maintaining a slow over-rate in the third and final ODI of the three-match series against England National Cricket Team at the Diamond Oval, Kimberley on Wednesday, February 1.

South Africa sealed the series by winning the first ODI by 27 runs and the second ODI by 5 wickets at the Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein. However, they faced a 59-run loss against the Three Lions at the Diamond Oval, Kimberley and the series finished with the Proteas winning by 2-1.

The loss hurt Temba Bavuma & Co. a lot as they failed to bag crucial ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League points and they were further dented due to their slow over-rate in the game. The Proteas have been docked a point in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Super League cycle. Also, they have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee.

“South Africa were ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration and Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction,” the International Cricket Council (ICC) stated.

South Africa National Cricket Team currently occupy the ninth position in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Super League Rankings and they have 79 points.

The top eight teams in the Super League table will directly qualify for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which is set to be held in India in October-November.

South Africa’s direct qualification chances have taken a major hit following their withdrawal from the three-match home ODI series against Australia and every point matters a lot to the side. Notably, a team gets 10 points for a win, 5 for a tie/no result/abandoned match, and 0 for a defeat.
