Suryakumar Yadav’s Wrists Work Better Than AB de Villiers – Ajay Jadeja

Former India National Cricket Team batter Ajay Jadeja has opined that the No.1 ranked T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav, while batting, uses his wrists way better than the legendary South Africa batter AB de Villiers.

Many compare Suryakumar to AB de Villiers due to his astonishing shot-making ability and he has also been nicknamed India’s Mr. 360. However, his recent T20I century against Sri Lanka has sparked conversations about him arguably being better than De Villiers at his peak.

Suryakumar played a spectacular knock in the series decider 3rd T20I against the Dasun Shanaka-led Team Sri Lanka and helped Team India win the match and the series at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Saturday, January 7.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Ajay Jadeja said that Suryakumar’s power game might not be as strong as De Villiers or Andre Russell, but he is still batting at a better career strike rate in T20Is and is more consistent because of the way he uses his wrists.

“AB de Villiers was one of the finest we have ever seen, no doubt but his (Suryakumar’s) consistency is a little bit more. AB probably had a little more power in his game, but what he (Suryakumar) adds is the wrist work, which AB didn’t have. The angles he was finding were because of his wrists. Both sides, his wrists work better than AB,” said Jadeja on Cricbuzz.

“Even while sweeping he uses the full arm and then uses his wrists. They are probably superior than the power hitters we have seen. We talk about enjoying watching people like Andre Russell who hit it hard but here is a guy who is probably scoring at a better strike rate and is more consistent. He is strong but not as much as everybody wants to be.”

Jadeja further said that the 32-year-old middle-order batter enjoys toying with the opposition.

“He is timing it and he is playing with you, not with the ball. He is playing with the bowler’s mind, the opposition, the field; The best strategy against him is to just go out there and just randomly stand wherever you want. It will be the same score or he might get confused,” he said.

Jadeja further said that the only way to stop Suryakumar from scoring would be to make random field placements that could confuse him.

“All great players have had great runs but then in a while they either slow down or go even faster. When this happens, it will be the field that will change it because I don’t think there is a ball that has not been tried against him. Now you have got to get him to think. In the IPL I won’t be surprised if a couple of teams would come up with totally random fields. There is just no other choice,” he said.

Suryakumar Yadav smashed the Sri Lanka bowlers all over the park in Rajkot and notched up his third T20I ton off 45 balls. Suryakumar Yadav hit 112* runs off 51 balls, including 7 fours and 9 sixes, to help Team India post a mammoth 228/5 on the board while batting first. Notably, Suryakumar became the first-ever non-opener to smash 3 T20I centuries.
