Beth Mooney-led Gujarat Giants did not have the start the franchise were looking for as the franchise were thrashed by Mumbai Indians in the opening fixture of the Women’s Premier League 2023 (WPL 2023) by a massive margin of 143 runs.
While skipper Beth Mooney won the toss and invited the opposition to bat first, the decision backfired after the initial overs as Mumbai managed to find their groove and smashed the Gujarat bowlers all around the park.

Harmanpreet Kaur, Hayley Matthews, and Amelia Kerr played some brilliant knocks to help their side post a mammoth 207 runs on the board. Vice-Captain Sneh Rana was the top bowler for her side as she managed to pick up a couple of wickets.
The chase started on a wrong note for Gujarat as they started losing batters one after the other. Skipper Beth Mooney was deemed retired hurt as within the first over as she suffered an injury and from that point in the game Gujarat could never bounce back as the wickets kept collapsing with Gujarat crumbling on just 64 runs on the board.

“This is just the start. Some players soak it up early, some will take time. The atmosphere was different and I think it was a great learning for us today. We will definitely come back stronger.”
“I think the physio will update [on Beth Mooney’s injury] in some time. See, whenever I get a responsibility, I have to stand on my foot. If I get a chance tomorrow, I will try not to make the mistakes we did today. We needed to keep our heads high and not repeat the mistakes. We have a lot of domestic cricketers who have been good before. We will definitely come back strong.”
Gujarat will not have a lot of time on their hands as the side are set to face UP Warriorz in their next fixture tomorrow and the side will likely have to take to the field in the absence of their skipper Beth Mooney.
