Arsenal “very interested” in Moussa Diaby

Arsenal are reportedly keen on bringing in Bayer Leverkusen sensation, Moussa Diaby, after having missed out on a deal for fellow forward, Mykhaylo Mudryk.

What’s the word?

According to German journalist, Patrick Berger, the north Londoners are seemingly eyeing a move for the 23-year-old this month, albeit with a switch believed to be more likely to take place during the summer for a potential fee of at least 75m (£66m).

Writing on Twitter regarding that developing story, the transfer insider revealed: “Arsenal again very interested in Moussa Diaby after Mudryk-deal collapsed! Understand there were initial talks between Gunners and Leverkusen. But the Bundesliga side don’t want to sell the French winger in January. Summer transfer more likely. Price tag €75m+huge bonuses.”

This follows a recent report from Sky Sports that suggested that Gunners’ sporting director Edu had made ‘initial contact’ regarding a possible deal for the Frenchman.

Arsenal’s very own Son

Despite the Bundesliga side’s apparent reluctance to sell this month, if the Emirates outfit can engineer a move it could well prove something of a masterstroke as far as Edu is concerned, with Diaby currently thriving in Germany.

The “dangerous” dynamo – as previously lauded by Freiburg’s Nils Petersen – has been in scintillating form at the BayArena of late with eight goals and four assists in 22 games in all competitions this term, ensuring that his total tally for the club now stands at 43 goals and 41 assists in 146 games.

Although there may be concern about the winger’s ability to adapt to life in the Premier League, those fears can be eased by his likeness to Tottenham Hotspur star, Heung-min Son, with the pair sharing a number of stylistic and statistical similarities, as per FBref.

Would Moussa Diaby be a good signing?

That comparison can not only be made due to the fact that the pair both pose a relentless threat on the flanks, but also with Son having originally made the move to England after a two-year spell at Leverkusen.

The two men are clearly ruthless and clinical figures from open play as the current Spurs ace ranks in the top 5% for non-penalty goals among those in his position in Europe, while Diaby is only just behind as he ranks in the top 11% in that regard.

Although it may pain Arsenal supporters to admit, it is hard to deny the impact that Son has made for the Lilywhites over the past seven years or so, with the hope being that the France international can follow in his footsteps if he is to trade the German top-flight for English football.

In the case of the Korean menace – who joined Tottenham back in 2015 on a £22m deal – the 30-year-old has consistently delivered the goods over the years, having scored 137 goals and provided 76 assists in 349 games for the club to date.

That success story will have sparked hope that Diaby can also make a smooth transition if he is to link up with Mikel Arteta’s side in the near future, with having a Son-esque talent on the books set to undoubtedly strengthen the league leaders even further.
