David Raya can fix Spurs’ big problem

Tottenham Hotspur are a club that admittedly has endured plenty of different issues over the last decade, especially in their desperate pursuit of a trophy.

Despite playing host to some of the Premier League‘s most talented players, it seems like they are destined to forever fall short at key moments.

One such problem that has become particularly pertinent of late is that of the goalkeeper position, which has come to the fore given the recent underperformance of Hugo Lloris.

Should Lloris leave Spurs?

No

No

This reared its ugly head at the worst possible time for Antonio Conte, culminating in back-to-back displays that the 36-year-old will struggle to forget.

Having palmed the ball into his own net against bitter rivals Arsenal, he would then concede four second-half goals to Manchester City the week following whilst earning the worst rating of anyone on the pitch.

The latter fixture saw him also make another error leading to a goal, his fourth of the season.

What seemed like a position of stability, where the club captain would stay until he saw fit to leave, has now turned into a nightmarish situation which threatens his legacy at the club.

That could therefore explain their recent interest in Brentford stopper David Raya, a move which Spanish publications have begun touting.

It is believed that the Bees will only demand around £20m for the services of their number one, who has excelled since their triumphant promotion to the Premier League; a price that will certainly draw interest from sporting director Fabio Paratici.

This season has arguably been his most impressive, earning a 7.19 average rating as his side sit above both Liverpool and Chelsea in the table.

Playing in a far less quality-ridden side than Lloris does, the Spaniard has only made one mistake leading to a goal whilst preventing plenty. This is particularly impressive given how often he is called into action to sweep up behind his defence.

The brick wall of a man averages 4.3 saves per match at a 75% success rate, but it is his ability on the ball that has truly drawn praise.

With Sky Sports presenter Dan Bardell dubbing him “next-level with his feet“, his 60% pass accuracy only serves to support this too.

There are few in the division who are as competent and composed on the ball, and yet his shot-stopping is equally exemplary. Raya is the quintessential modern-day goalkeeper and would mark a fine fix for Spurs’ big problem in between the sticks.
