Man Utd & Newcastle reach semi-finals

The quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup kicked off on Tuesday night, with Manchester United hosting League One Charlton Athletic and Leicester City travelling to Newcastle United in an all-Premier League clash.

The Red Devils were looking to avoid a rather sizeable upset and progress to the semi-finals of this competition for the third time in four seasons, while Toon fans were desperate to see their side in the last four of anything.

Manchester United managed to stave off a spirited Charlton and reach the semi-finals.

Antony gave the hosts a deserved lead in the first half, curling into the top corner from range and past a host of Athletic bodies.

Dean Holden’s visitors stood resolute at Old Trafford but came unstuck as the match entered stoppage time at the end of the second half.

Substitute Marcus Rashford gave United a two-goal cushion at the end of a swift counter attack to kill off any hope of a late Charlton comeback, before adding another in almost identical circumstances moments later.

Newcastle advanced to the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1976 with a deserved win at home to Leicester.

The Magpies battered the Foxes across the 90 minutes, but were made to wait in order to edge in front and settle the nerves.

Sean Longstaff somehow spurned a glorious chance from mere yards out just 46 seconds into the tie to kick off a wasteful half of football for Newcastle.

Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron were all guilty of missing great opportunities at St James’ Park, before an unlikely hero emerged just after the break.

Local lad Dan Burn scored his first goal for his boyhood club after weaving his way in off the left flank and slotting under Danny Ward to break the deadlock.

Joelinton added a second for Newcastle shortly after, while Jamie Vardy was unable to pull one back with a free shot from within the penalty area to compound Leicester’s miserable run.
