Sebastian Cordova reveals ‘little details were missing’ at Tigres under Miguel Herrera

Sebastian Cordova revealed what went wrong at Tigres under former head coach Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera, admitting “there were little details that were missing.”

Tigres UANL parted ways with Herrera in November, following a disappointing 2022 Apertura campaign. Though the team concluded the season in fifth place on the table with 30 points in 17 games and a record of 9W-5L-3D, Tigres quickly fell to Pachuca in the playoffs’ quarterfinals.

After the loss, Piojo Herrera blamed an “aged roster.”

He led the Tigres for three tournaments, joining ahead of the 2021 Liga MX Apertura. Herrera propelled the team to fourth on the table in his initial year before drastically improving. The following campaign, the head coach managed second place on the table, before a standout postseason run that saw a semifinal appearance against Atlas FC.

Despite decent postseason performances, Herrera did not win a trophy with Tigres UANL.

“I think there were little details here and there, some plays that we didn’t complete or went backwards that ultimately influenced the score. There were little details that were missing and nothing more. The little details, in the past tournaments, happened that we had to fix to be able to be in the final and win,” Cordova said to TUDN.

The coach has since appointed former Atlas manager Diego Cocca to lead Tigres.

“I think we’re going to like him, changes are always good and we adapt as quickly as we can so that we can all grab the role that the teacher wants and go with that,” Cordova added.

“I think the changes are good, we know that when a new coach arrives, everyone wants it more, everyone wants a place and they have to earn it. I think we’re going to like him very much and I’ve always seen the team very well since I arrived. I know it is a winning team that has won many championships recently and we need it, hopefully the new coach will give us that boost to be able to complete that.”

Cocca comes in after leading Atlas to back-to-back Liga MX trophies, breaking the team’s 70-year title drought when defeating Club Leon on December 12 2021. The 2023 Liga MX Clausura is set to kick off on January 6, giving Cocca plenty of time to adjust and make the necessary changes to the squad.
