West Ham United are interested in deal to bring Joan González to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.
What’s the talk?
That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), who claim that, having been one of the ‘revelations’ of Pantaleo Corvino’s Lecce side this season, a number of clubs are interested in signing the central midfielder this winter, including the likes of West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Borussia Dortmund.
The report goes on to state that the Serie A side are ‘already looking forward’ to the sale of the former Barcelona starlet, with top-flight newcomers said to value the 20-year-old at a figure in the region of €15m (£13m).
Ditch Souček
While it is undeniable that Tomáš Souček made a huge impact following his €21m (£18m) signing in the summer of 2020 – scoring ten goals and averaging an impressive Sofascore match rating of 7.16 in his first full campaign with the club – considering how poor the 27-year-old has been this season, it is not difficult to see why David Moyes would be keen on a move for González.
Indeed, over González’s 15 Serie A appearances this term, the £2.5m-rated talent has been in fantastic form, scoring one goal, registering two assists and creating two big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 0.6 shots, making 0.7 key passes and completing 0.5 dribbles per game.
The 20-year-old has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 1.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.3 clearances and winning 5.1 duels per match.
Furthermore, it is evident that the £34.5m-rated Souček has been far from his best so far this season, with ExWHUemployee stating of the 27-year-old earlier back in September: “The whole game is bypassing him regularly. He’s had a good half against Tottenham, I think, from memory. A decent game against Chelsea, from memory.
“Other than that, he hasn’t performed. Honestly, I’ve been saying this for over a year now, I’ve been saying this for about a year and a half. The game just bypasses him.”
As such, while it would undoubtedly be a bold call to ditch Souček for González in January, considering just how exciting a prospect the “magic” Spaniard very much appears to be, coupled with how below-par the Czech Republic international has been this season, it could very well be a risk worth taking for Moyes and his transfer team this winter.
