Who will Morocco face in the World Cup semi finals?

[ad_1]

Morocco continued their historic run at this year’s World Cup by beating Portugal to reach the semi finals.

A defensive mix-up allowed Youssef En-Nesyri to head in the only goal of the game at Al Thumama Stadium on Saturday, eliminating Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and co from the tournament.

The African side previously beat both Belgium and Canada to finish first in Group F, which was rewarded with a last 16 tie with Spain.

They held La Roja to a goalless draw and watched on with joy as Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets all missed their penalties in the shootout, allowing Achraf Hakimi to Panenka in the winner.

That result made them just the fourth African side after Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010) to reach the quarter finals, but victory over Portugal makes the Atlas Lions the first team ever from the continent to make the World Cup semi finals.

Here’s who Morocco will face after their historic win.

Morocco will now wait for the result of the last quarter final between England and France on Saturday night to learn their opponents in the last four.

The Three Lions eased their way through Group B with wins over Iran and Wales before beating Senegal 3-0 in the last 16.

Les Bleus beat both Australia and Denmark in the group stage before a much-changed XI lost to Tunisia. They then overwhelmed Poland thanks to a record-breaking strike from Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe’s stunning double.

Who could Morocco face in the final?

The other semi final involves Argentina and Croatia, meaning Morocco would face one of those sides in the final if they beat England or France.

Argentina scuppered a 2-0 lead in normal time as the Netherlands mounted a comeback late on to take them to penalties. However, misses from Steven Berghuis and Virgil van Dijk allowed La Albiceleste to progress the final four.

Croatia caused a massive shock in the quarter finals. Neymar had Brazil 1-0 up in extra time after 90 goalless minutes, but Bruno Petkovic’s dramatic equaliser took the game to penalties. Misses from Marquinhos and Rodrygo allowed Luka Modric and co to secure a 4-2 victory.

If Morocco lose, they will face the other defeated semi finalists in the third place playoff.
