IND vs AUS: “I Had A Tough Time, Dale Steyn And Morne Morkel Were At Their Peak”

Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara will play his 100th Test match against Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi starting Friday, February 17. And ahead of the milestone Test, the right handed batter shared an interesting story about Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel giving him a tough time on his first overseas tour.

The 35-year-old becomes the 13th Indian player to achieve the feat of playing 100 or more Tests. Former captain Virat Kohli was the last Indian player to do so. Pujara has been a batting mainstay for India in Tests for more than a decade. He played an important role in India’s Test victory on Australian soil in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2018-19.

It Is Like Facing A Different Challenge – Cheteshwar Pujara

Ahead of his landmark Test, Cheteshwar Pujara told an interesting story of how he struggled with the pace and bounce of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in his first overseas series in South Africa. Pujara said that he asked Rahul Dravid, who is the current head coach, to help him and ensure that he succeeds in the tour of South Africa next time.

“In 2010, my first overseas series, I had a tough time. I batted at No. 5 or 6. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel were at their peak. I still remember I spoke to Rahul bhai [Dravid] that I am finding it difficult because I have always played on Indian pitches where the bounce is low and the pace is slow,” he said.

“And in South Africa, I am finding it difficult to get acclimatised and it is like facing a different challenge altogether. He gave some good advice. I worked on it. I ensured that whenever I came to South Africa next, I would do well, I wanted to be successful against those bowlers. That happened in 2013 in Johannesburg,” he added.

The Saurashtra batter made his Test debut against Australia at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on October 9, 2010. He represented India in 99 Test matches and scored 7021 runs at an average of 44.16, including 19 centuries, 3 double hundreds, and 34 fifties.
